Against notrump
A, K, Q, J and 10 count as honors. Leonardo applies these rules in order:
•
With three consecutive honors, he leads the highest.
•
With three honors where the two highest are consecutive and the third is the next honor after a gap, he leads the highest.
•
With three honors where the two lowest are consecutive, he leads the higher of those two.
•
With two consecutive honors and at least one other card in the suit, he leads the higher honor.
•
With only two consecutive honors in the suit, he leads the lower honor.
If none of those rules applies and the suit contains an honor, he leads fourth highest from four or more cards, lowest from three, and an honor from two. If the two cards are nonconsecutive honors, he leads the higher one.
Without an honor, he leads second highest from four or more cards, middle from three, and highest from two.
Examples
•
With ♠A ♠K ♠Q ♠5, he leads the ♠A from three consecutive honors.
•
With ♥8 ♥6 ♥4 and no honors, he leads the middle card: ♥6.
Against a trump contract
A, K, Q and J count as honors. The 10 counts as an honor only for the rule about two consecutive honors with no other card in the suit. Leonardo applies these rules in order:
•
If he has the Ace in the chosen suit, he leads the Ace.
•
With at least three cards in the suit and three consecutive honors, he leads the highest.
•
With three honors where the two lowest are consecutive, he leads the higher of those two.
•
With only two consecutive honors in the suit, he leads the lower honor.
If none of those rules applies and the suit contains an honor, he leads fourth highest from four or more cards, lowest from three, and an honor from two. If the two cards are nonconsecutive honors, he leads the higher one.
